In late 2009 we were approached to develop the Next iPhone app, a flagship project that required not just a feature-rich mobile experience, but also a scalable backend architecture to support future cross-platform expansion.
The initial app featured a wide array of capabilities, including a full product catalogue from next.co.uk, integrated checkout functionality, a store finder with location-based search (“show my nearest”), and a custom CMS to manage catalogue updates, promotional imagery, and seasonal campaigns.
One of the most critical challenges was working within the constraints of the App Store approval process. To avoid the need for constant resubmissions, we engineered a hybrid native/webview checkout model, allowing real-time backend updates without requiring an app update. By building the checkout as a fully responsive HTML experience, we ensured a consistent, flexible solution that could seamlessly support both current and future platforms.

Following on from the success of the initial launch, over the course of the next 4 years we proceeded to port the App onto virtually every major platform including, iPad, Android, Windows 8. The App is used by millions of users across many different platforms.
